Interior Design Dwelling

  • Krijgsman Muiden, Woonhuis Sinnige, Axonometrie Interieur
  • Krijgsman Muiden, Woonhuis Sinnige, Gang 1e Verdieping

We were asked to make an interior design  for a client with a family of four. Organisation of space and practical items (storage) were of importance. We suggested a large “cupboard”, spanning the two floors, dividing the house into two parts. The large part houses the rooms. The small part is reserved for the corridor and practical stuff (central heating etc). When entering the house one stands in a hallway and one sees the ground and upper floor and the cupboard.  This give an immediate sense of orientation. The long corridor ads to the spatial  quality. The cupboard does not reach the roof which gives another dimension to the spatial quality.  In a practical sense the cupboard performs well. It harbors the room for the stuff the family uses in daily life.

Isolation in cavity

24 January 2009 by hugo

Isolation in cavity

In 2012 an old monument in the centre of Amsterdam is being restored. Like in most old monuments, this house has its own walls and foundation. Betweeen the house and the adjacent buildings there exists a small cavity. These cavities are in contact with the open air. They have an irregular form. It would make good sense to isolate them. Both houses would benefit and no space is lost. We engineered a reversible solution, using polystyrene without glue, making sure that the material can be removed if the need arises.

This experiment is being monitored by us.

Sustainable Farm

24 January 2006 by hugo

Sustainable Farm

We were asked to design a farm for a farmer who takes good care of his cattle, produces cheese on his farm and markets his own brand of cheese.
One of the main questions: how to create a large cowshed for the cows to live naturally (and keep their horns), without jeopardizing the economic fundamentals underpinning a farm.

Proposal
The surroundings are to be made with elements found in the local environment. Local plants, reed and water will provide a natural look and will require almost no upkeep. The cowshed is made of several inflated membranes carried by inflated beams. This is an extremely lightweight construction, itself quite efficient in producing a large span and reducing the cost of the foundation. The farm itself is to be a well insulated timber framed building with a closed facade facing north and a glass facade facing south, incorporating a small shop. Environment, stables and house produce an image that will strengthen the brand.

It is housed in a wall of earth. In front is an open space covered with a tent under which a fire burns. Along the axis a chapel and a new cascade of water descending into the park. Cladding

Cladding

In 1998 we renovated a facade. We decided to use Western Red Cedar for reasons of efficiency and looks. We searched, but could not find a membrane that would be sufficiently resistant (UV). In the end we decided to use a roofing membrane made of PVC.
How would this facade withstand the elements? Would it keep good looks when ageing?
15 Years on, PVC and wood are still in good condition. There is some degradation, mainly dirt clinging tot the PVC, but it does not accumulate, it is washed away regularly when getting really
wet.
