On the ground floor of a drive-in we designed a studio for two.  A few interventions  sufficed to create a studio with excellent spatial quality. Introducing two sliding doors created a walk around, removal of two doors created a line of sight from the front to the back.  In the front we situated a kitchen and a dinner table. The two rooms giving on the garden changed in living and sleeping quarters. The addition of a toilet next to the shower completes this studio.

Architectural Design Superstructure

Hugo Caron architects has created an architectural design and an interior design for a superstructure on IJburg in Amsterdam. The design is characterized by simplicity, spatial effect and unity of material. In the middle of the room is a wooden box containing a bathroom and storage room. This box does not extend to the wooden load-bearing roof. There is a glass partition between the box and the roof. The front facade has been set back slightly behind the grid facade, which brings it to life spatially and is less imposing. The unity of material ensures a quiet interior to which nothing needs to be added.

  1. Two sided bench efficiently separating en and facilitating living and eating
  2. Small extension of the shower making space for the toilet
  3. Sliding door giving entrance to the sleeping quarters
  4. Creating a separate way in from the street

Interior design and alteration of a House

We were asked to make an interior design  for a client with a family of four. Organisation of space and practical items (storage) were of importance. We suggested a large “cupboard”, spanning the two floors, dividing the house into two parts. The large part houses the rooms. The small part is reserved for the corridor and practical stuff (central heating etc). When entering the house one stands in a hallway and one sees the ground and upper floor and the cupboard.  This give an immediate sense of orientation. The long corridor ads to the spatial  quality. The cupboard does not reach the roof which gives another dimension to the spatial quality.  In a practical sense the cupboard performs well. It harbors the room for the stuff the family uses in daily life.

Architectural design and interior design for a sustainable garden house and guest house. Transformation of a former garage and storage into a garden house that should be suitable as a guesthouse.
The existing envelope that faces the adjacent areas is maintained and it is insulated, just like the roof. The floor is raised, insulated, heated and used as an installation support.
The south-facing garden facade will be made entirely of glass. A decentralized box within the box contains the kitchen, the wet room and the children’s bedroom. This box forms the separation between the dining and sitting room and the master bedroom. The ceiling and walls are visible across the entire width. Sliding doors provide compartmentalization when necessary

Winning entry in the competition for an architectural design of an autarkic houseboat, organized by the municipality of Amsterdam A multidisciplinary team has worked on a sustainable and energy-efficient houseboat that pushes the outer limit of autonomy. The boat fully meets the needs of an average household. Connection to the shore can be omitted. Energy is generated, water is recycled and made drinkable again, all waste is processed into usable residues.

Design: The Cavity Filled

In 2012, a national monument in Amsterdam will be restored and made more sustainable. As usual, the building stands on its own land and foundation and there are small cavities between this building and the neighboring buildings. These spaces are very narrow, irregularly shaped and are in direct contact with the outside air. Isolating is not easy, but very rewarding. An insulated cavity allows the buildings to benefit on both sides without losing space inside. A reversible solution has been designed with a material that is highly resistant to moisture and also ventilates a little. Expanded polystyrene has been used, without glue. The cavity can therefore be drained again.

This experiment is being monitored by us.

Restoration and renovation of a national monument in Amsterdam

Turn this worn-out and dilapidated 17th century government monument whose floors hang 30cm crooked, into a luxurious home for a family.
Design: straightening the floors, restoring the entire building, making the basement habitable.
Spatial intervention: introducing space and light into the basement. Through a large doorway to the partly excavated garden, an increased height and voids to the floor above, a basement becomes a usable floor. Use this floor as an informal living space and kitchen. New staircase in a spacious void that will illuminate the building from above

Architectural design of a Sustainable Farm

We were asked to design a farm for a farmer who takes good care of his cattle, produces cheese on his farm and markets his own brand of cheese.
One of the main questions: how to create a large cowshed for the cows to live naturally (and keep their horns), without jeopardizing the economic fundamentals underpinning a farm.

Proposal
The surroundings are to be made with elements found in the local environment. Local plants, reed and water will provide a natural look and will require almost no upkeep. The cowshed is made of several inflated membranes carried by inflated beams. This is an extremely lightweight construction, itself quite efficient in producing a large span and reducing the cost of the foundation. The farm itself is to be a well insulated timber framed building with a closed facade facing north and a glass facade facing south, incorporating a small shop. Environment, stables and house produce an image that will strengthen the brand.

Design Exhibition Metromol

Design for a travelling exhibition that moves at the same time as the drill that drills the underground metro tube, a competition of the municipality of Amsterdam. In Amsterdam, a drill rushed through the peat underground (2010 to 2012). Above ground, this is
imperceptible.
How to make this known to the city’s residents and visitors?

Proposal: temporarily free the façades where the “mole” is located from sufferance. Expressions are created that mark the location of the drill and move with the drill through the city. Long live freedom of speech!

Sculptures in the Hortus Botanicus

Exhibition design. The Amsterdam Sculptors’ Collective commissioned a sculpture exhibition in the Hortus of Amsterdam.
There are two problems that need to be addressed:

  • The images are very different from each other in every way and therefore cannot simply be put together.
  • The Hortus is completely full of plants, so there is little space for the statues and they are difficult to find.

The solution: A 270-metre ellipse connects the images. At the intersection of path and ellipse, the visitor finds a statue. In-house execution by collective.

Landscaping plan IJsselhof Cemetery Gouda

Landscaping plan commissioned by the municipality of Gouda. An assignment for the fitting of a crematorium into a cemetery.

The Plan The cemetery is located outside the dikes on the Hollandse IJssel. The site, consisting of two strongly separated parts, also houses a park. We turned the area into one big park, the separation was lifted. The existing monumental row of trees and planting were maintained and used to create an axis that starts in a covered clearing. There, the crematorium is incorporated into an earthen wall. Outside, under a tarpaulin, the fire is burning. Along the axis are a chapel and a new water feature. The axis points to the sea, the water along the park is tidal water, has ebb and flow. IJsselhof Gouda

Gemeenlanden “Commonlands” Houses

Architectural design for a small new residential area in Huizen: De Gemeenlanden. The winning design from a competition between 13 developer-architect combinations. The district accommodates 64 single-family homes in low-rise buildings and 68 apartments in medium-rise buildings. The place: the former LBO school in Huizen N-H.
The starting point is the transformation of an old school building. Maintaining the skeleton and providing new façades and fit-out.
Reasons: it is a sustainable solution, the building is a familiar image in the area and it provides a backbone for the development of the area. In the centre is a green square with a pond that connects to the adjacent greenery. Around this square: three types of housing. Low-rise buildings, medium-rise buildings in new buildings and medium-rise buildings in the renovated school. A total of about 125 homes. In collaboration with Budding&Fels Amsterdam. Façade cladding Amsterdam-Centre

Architectural design façade cladding. In 1998 we worked on the renovation of a façade. An efficient and beautiful solution was found in an open façade cladding made of Western Red Cedar. However, the films that were on the market at that time did not meet the requirements in terms of appearance and resistance to UV exposure.
The solution: a PVC roofing membrane.

How would the façade hold up over time? Two samples were produced. One for the client and prosperity and one to test outside.
15 years later, PVC and wood are holding up well. There is no serious ageing of the film. Pollution occurs, but is also washed away by the rain.
